My name is Violet Makunike. I work for the Federation of African Media =
Women (FAMW) in the ICTs department. FAMW is a regional media women=92s =
organisation that seeks to promote media women=92s interests and those =
of marginalised groups, especially women. FAMW uses unique tools to =
assist communities develop themselves and the communities they reside =
in. These include: =20
> Development Through Radio (DTR) Projects
This is a unique rural radio project, popularly known as the Radio =
Listeners=92 Clubs, the DTR project was developed to give rural people =
access to radio thus enabling them to have a voice. It facilitates =
information exchange between clubs so that they can share experiences, =
and links rural people with policy makers and non-governmental =
organisations that offer solutions and resources respectively. =
Non-governmental organisations also use this unique platform for their =
advocacy programmes such as voter education, land rights, women=92s =
rights, violence against women. =20
> Community Radio Stations (CRS) Projects
FAMW=92s community radio stations were established to empower women and =
disadvantaged groups, to actively participate in community dialogue and =
decision making processes that impact on their lives. They also ensure =
adequate and engendered coverage of critical developmental issues =
affecting these groups as a means towards sustainable development. The =
project has enabled communities to have access and control of community =
media. =20
> Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)
FAMW is in the process of linking the DTR and CRS projects to ICTs =
through establishing a virtual newspaper. The newspaper aims at =
mainstreaming gender issues and showcase women=92s role in development =
and promote positive images of African women. The stories will emanate =
from the grassroots level. The overall objective of the project is to =
collect and disseminate information emerging from the marginalized =
groups as they identify and prioritise their issues.
I confident that I will learn from the other organizations who are =
already using the ICTs at grassroots level. ICTs are now the modern =
tools used for communiation, therefore everyone has the right to access =
this tool. The digital divide issue has to be closed so as to enable =
the disadvantaged to have access to ICTs. =20
