Greetings to all from the Dimitra project,

As a word of introduction, Dimitra is an information and communication
project which works through a network of local partners in Africa and
the Near East. 

The project's main objective is to use both modern and traditional
information and communication techniques to increase the visibility of
rural women's contribution to their community and their country and to
improve their living conditions and status. 

Dimitra is implemented by the Gender and Development Service (SDWW), of
the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations - (FAO) and
is coordinated in Brussels with support from Rome.

Through its growing network of partner organisations, Dimitra aims to
act as a tool for rural populations, and rural women's organisations in
particular, to make their voices heard internationally and to encourage
information exchange at every level. Access to information is a very
powerful tool in the fight against poverty and an important factor in
reinforcing women's influence in their communities and their ability to
participate in the decision-making process.

Dimitra is interested to explore how best to reach out to rural
populations, encourage participation and sharing of knowledge and
know-how, and promote a bottom-up approach to many of the issues of
crucial importance in rural areas today.  

It is with great pleasure that Dimitra is supporting Women'sNet in the
organisation of this workshop and we look forward very much to an
exciting and inspirational exchange of ideas and experiences around the
topics of ICTs, information and rural women's empowerment.
