Hello everyone,

Adding to Nnenna's contribution, awhile back I worked for a project we had
dubbed women's voices and the purpose was to get women to find an
appropriate tool to communicate their issues to policy makers. (Though we
worked with poor urban women living in informal settlements, there is a lot
of similarity to poor rural women in that both are marginalized)

The project identified the video as the tool. So we identified twenty women
whose ages ranged from 20 - 65 to take part in the project. The project was
successful beyond everyone's expectations. Later on they confessed and said
they never though they had a chance at learning and indeed using a video
camera. But after their first practical where they shot each other ) and
then watched over the TV (chopped of a few heads etc but they could still
identify themselves) they believed they could make it. The video was
successful because many could identify with it - from watching television.
it was easier to use once they had the basics on how to use the camera it
was just an issue of shooting what they were watching.

The project brought only women together and they had a chance to develop
their confidence slowly as opposed to if we would have mixed the men. And as
the women went round their poor informal settlements capturing their
challenges their confidence grew. After the training, they did acquire a
video camera and they even managed to capture issues such as forced
evictions etc. And after the video, they wanted to venture into all this
other ICTs e.g. Internet, E-mail, radio etc. Unfortunately there were no
funds to move on.

So it is important as Nnena said to create a space for the women, start from
where they are/what they know. Challenges we faced included issues to do
with the women availing time to do this as their days are full of activities
-they are usually up at around 4:00 a.m. to go to the market to get
vegetables to come sell. when all the vegetables are sold uss in the
afternoon, they now have time to do some house work and all that. So it took
long to train and document their challenges. We also faced challenges from
some of the spouses who were not happy that their women were undertaking
such an initiative.

*What are the lessons from and challenges of projects that use
different media to capture women's voices?

Dear all

I am a bit of bent for the moment. So my contribution will be short.

Capturing women voices through the media is influenced by factors. City
women are more open than the rural ones. But generally, getting women to
talk needs "a bit of space apart". So women centers, meetings and
associations are the best framework to get women voices to be heard.

The topic also affects. Once there is a bit of "how to survive hunger",
everybody is there. I had a project in a muslim country. It went from
gardening to vaccination, to literacy, and finally to a local radio! If we
had done it the other way, nobody will pay attention!

All for now

Nnenna
