ANNOUNCING THE APC HAFKIN PRIZE FOR 2004/5:
Recognising community connectivity projects
for economic development in Africa

"Connectivity is a term referring to the means by which people are 
connected to or are able to access communications channels such as the 
internet, email, computer and people networks."

The theme for this year's Hafkin Prize recognises community initiatives 
that use the internet and other digital communication networks to access 
markets, skills and opportunities to derive real economic benefits.

The CRITERIA by which entries will be judged by our international jury 
include:

1. Positive economic impact

* The project demonstrates a positive economic contribution to the 
community
* Has a long term vision for sustaining impact which includes training 
and developing local expertise
* Provides an equal opportunity for participation by the community 
regardless of sex, religion, political persuasion or income levels
* Is documented so that others can learn from the model

2. Africa-driven and developing Africa

* Developed and implemented by people and/or organisations based in Africa
* Must be local and community-based

3. Sustainable use of technology

* Offers or makes use of technology that is available and supported locall=
y
* Demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between technology 
and the needs of the community on the ground.

THE PRIZE IS OPEN TO: The competition is open to civil society 
organisations, government institutions, educational organisations, 
community-based groups, networks, social movements or individuals 
anywhere in Africa. Applications will be accepted in both English and 
French.

THE PRIZE: USD$7,500.00 will be shared amongst up to three winning 
initiatives.

Les CRITERES par lesquels les inscriptions seront jug=E9es par notre jury 
international sont les suivants:

1. Impact =E9conomique positif

* Le projet apporte une contribution =E9conomique positive =E0 la communau=
t=E9
* A une vision =E0 long terme pour maintenir l=92impact comprenant la 
formation et l=92acquisition d=92une expertise locale
* Donne =E0 la communaut=E9 des chances =E9gales de participation, sans =E9=
gard 
au sexe, =E0 la religion, aux opinions politiques ou au niveau de revenu
* Est document=E9 de sorte que d=92autres peuvent s=92inspirer du mod=E8le

2. =CAtre centr=E9 sur l'Afrique et favoriser son d=E9veloppement

* D=E9velopp=E9 et mis en oeuvre par des personnes ou des organisations 
bas=E9es en Afrique
* Doit =EAtre local et communautaire

3. Utilisation durable de la technologie

* Offre ou utilise la technologie disponible ou appuy=E9e localement
* Comprend le lien entre la technologie et les besoins de la communaut=E9 
sur le terrain.

LE PRIX EST OUVERT AUX ENTIT=C9S SUIVANTES : Le concours est ouvert aux 
organisations de la soci=E9t=E9 civile, aux institutions gouvernementales,=
 
aux organisations d=92enseignement, aux groupes communautaires, aux 
r=E9seaux, aux mouvements sociaux ou aux particuliers partout en Afrique. 
Les demandes seront accept=E9es en fran=E7ais et en anglais.

LE PRIX : 7 500 $ US, sera partag=E9 entre les trois initiatives laur=E9at=
es.
